As a physiotherapist, I’ve seen TENS help some people manage their pain incredibly well — while others find it less useful. In this blog, I’ll walk you through what TENS is, how to use it safely, and how to know if it might work for your kind of pain.
⚠️ Important note: While TENS can offer relief, it’s not a long-term fix. If you’re dealing with ongoing pain, the first step should always be to understand and resolve the root cause. That might mean improving how you move, strengthening key areas, reducing load, or settling inflammation. TENS can be a helpful tool along the way — but it shouldn’t replace good rehab.
What Is a TENS Machine?
TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. It’s a small, battery-powered device that sends gentle electrical pulses through sticky electrode pads placed on the skin near the painful area.
It doesn’t “cure” the cause of pain, but it may help block pain signals or stimulate the body’s natural pain-relieving chemicals, giving you relief — often without medication.
How Does TENS Work?
There are two main theories:
1. Gate Control Theory
Think of your nervous system like a busy motorway. Pain signals travel along the nerves to your brain — but if you introduce another stimulus (like gentle electrical pulses), it can “block the gate” and stop pain signals getting through as strongly.

Is TENS Safe?

- Have a pacemaker or implanted defibrillator
- Are pregnant (unless using it specifically for labour)
