Comfort Zone or Growth Zone? What a 24-Hour Charity Run Taught Me About Courage, Health, and Personal Growth

We love stories of extraordinary endurance — people who push their minds and bodies far beyond what feels possible. And this week, I’ve been lucky enough to support someone doing exactly that: a 24-hour charity run, fuelled by determination, courage and something deeper than fitness… purpose.

Watching him prepare, push through barriers, and stay committed has sparked something powerful in me, too. Because while most of us won’t run for 24 hours straight, every single one of us has a “comfort zone” we stay in for far too long, especially when it comes to our health.

And the truth is this:

Growth rarely happens when we feel comfortable — real change comes when we step into the unknown.

This is true for physical fitness
This is true for recovery
This is true for pain
And it’s definitely true for personal growth.

Why Pushing Out of Your Comfort Zone Is So Good for You

Stepping outside your comfort zone doesn’t mean doing something extreme. It simply means challenging yourself in ways your mind or body hasn’t yet adapted to.

1. It builds physical resilience

When you try something new — a new movement, a new habit, a new strength challenge — your body adapts.
This is literally how muscles grow, how joints become stronger, and how pain often reduces.

2. It strengthens your mindset

Courage isn’t the absence of fear — it’s the ability to take action despite it.
Every time you choose the slightly harder option, your confidence grows.

3. It improves long-term health

Avoiding challenge keeps the body stagnant.
Introducing controlled, progressive challenge encourages:

  • better mobility
  • stronger muscles
  • improved cardiovascular health
  • reduced injury risk
  • better emotional wellbeing

4. It changes how you see yourself

Trying something new — even something small — proves you are capable of more than you think.
And that belief becomes the foundation for every future success.

How This Has Reminded Me of My Own Personal Growth

Supporting someone taking on such an enormous challenge has made me reflect on my own journey.
Most of my personal growth hasn’t come from physical feats — it’s come from mental courage. The courage to:

  • build my clinic
  • launch online programs
  • share my own struggles
  • step into new ideas, tools, and technologies
  • keep learning, changing, improving – self development

And if I’m honest, the biggest leaps forward always happened when I felt uncomfortable.

When my brain said,
“Are you sure?”
“Is this too much?”
“Stay where it’s safe.”

And I chose to lean in anyway.

That’s when life shifted.

What This Means for You

You don’t need to run 24 hours.
You don’t need to do anything extreme.

But if you want better health, less pain, more strength, or more joy…
you DO need to stretch your comfort zone just a little.

Here are some gentle, realistic ways to start:

Small Comfort-Zone Challenges That Boost Your Health

  • Add one new strength exercise this week
  • Book that appointment you’ve been avoiding
  • Start a short daily mobility routine
  • Go for a 5-minute walk the moment you wake up
  • Try something new you secretly believe you “can’t do”
  • Reduce a habit that’s been draining your energy
  • Increase your antioxidant intake (fruits, veg, supplements)
  • Drink more water
  • Go to bed 20 minutes earlier

Tiny steps count.
Tiny steps compound.
And tiny steps create massive change.

Why This Matters So Much to Me as a Physio

Every single day, I see two versions of people:

1️⃣ The person who stays in their comfort zone – stuck, scared to try, afraid of making things worse.
2️⃣ The person who steps slightly beyond it – and starts transforming.

And the difference is rarely physical ability.
It’s mindset.

My mission both as a physiotherapist and as a human is to help you become the second type of person.

To help you step forward.
To help you feel stronger.
To help you discover what you’re truly capable of.

Because when you invest in your health, you’re not just improving your body…
you’re improving your entire future.

Your Invitation: Step Into Your Growth Zone This January

If watching a 24-hour run has taught me anything, it’s that:

Courage isn’t loud.
It’s the quiet, consistent decision to keep going.

January is coming and it’s the perfect time to make choices that truly count.

Choose the walk.
Choose the habit.
Choose the stretch.
Choose yourself.

Join me in stepping out of your comfort zone even just a little and let’s make 2026 the year of real, meaningful growth.

Take care, Helen

I have worked with Helen for many years at Leeds Nuffield hospital where I work as a specialist hip and knee surgeon. As part of my practice we have plenty of patients who have problems with their back. I occasionally struggle with my own back and know Helen is the lady to help sort it out. Not only did she give brilliant care in terms of getting it going again, but she also gave some great advice to keep it in great shape. I have been following this for the last couple of years and have been abusing my back with games of squash since with no problems. Thanks for the great care. Would definitely recommend.
