Copper for Arthritis: Does It Really Help? Here’s What the Research Says

If you’ve ever looked for natural ways to manage arthritis pain, you’ve probably come across copper bracelets, copper-infused gloves, or even copper patches. These products are often marketed as a way to ease joint pain and inflammation — but do they actually work?

As a physiotherapist, I’ve had many patients ask about copper for arthritis. And while I never like to say a flat “no” to anything that brings someone comfort, I do think it’s important to understand what the evidence says so you can make an informed choice.

Let’s explore the facts together.

What Does the Research Say?

1. Copper Bracelets and Rheumatoid Arthritis

Copper bracelets have been used for decades as a supposed remedy for arthritis, especially rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, scientific studies haven’t found them to be effective.

One large, high-quality study published in PLoS One in 2013 found that copper bracelets had no significant impact on pain, inflammation, or disease activity in people with RA. The researchers concluded that any benefit people might feel was likely due to the placebo effect — which, in fairness, is still a powerful thing!

2. Copper and Osteoarthritis

When it comes to osteoarthritis (OA) — the “wear and tear” type — the evidence is also weak. No strong studies have shown copper to reduce symptoms or slow progression.

3. Copper in the Body

Copper is a vital mineral for health. It helps with:

  • Collagen production
  • Iron metabolism
  • Immune function

Some early research hinted that people with arthritis might have altered copper levels, but taking copper supplements hasn’t been shown to relieve joint pain in clinical trials. And excess copper can actually be harmful if overused, so it’s not something to start supplementing without medical advice.

4. Copper-Infused Clothing

You’ll also find gloves, sleeves, or supports that are infused with copper. These may offer comfort or relief, but the benefit likely comes from:

  • Gentle compression
  • Warmth
  • Support of the joint

At this stage, there’s no solid evidence that copper absorbed through the skin reduces pain or inflammation.

So… Should You Try It?

Here’s my honest take:

If wearing a copper bracelet or glove makes your joints feel better — or gives you peace of mind — then it’s not necessarily a bad thing. Just know that the science doesn’t back it up. And if you do decide to try something copper-based, be cautious about spending large amounts or expecting long-term change.

What I would recommend is looking at things that are consistently shown to help with arthritis, like:

  • Tailored exercise (especially strength work)
  • Weight management
  • Joint-friendly movement strategies
  • Hands-on physiotherapy support
  • Anti-inflammatory strategies — including both diet and medications when appropriate

Final Thoughts

I always say: Your body, your choice.

Copper might not be the miracle cure it’s often claimed to be, but if it brings you comfort and isn’t causing harm, there’s no need to ditch it completely. Just don’t rely on it as your main form of arthritis treatment.

The best outcomes come when you combine comfort strategies with things that build your body’s strength and resilience — and that’s where I can help. Please remember I’m here to support you if you need.

I have worked with Helen for many years at Leeds Nuffield hospital where I work as a specialist hip and knee surgeon. As part of my practice we have plenty of patients who have problems with their back. I occasionally struggle with my own back and know Helen is the lady to help sort it out. Not only did she give brilliant care in terms of getting it going again, but she also gave some great advice to keep it in great shape. I have been following this for the last couple of years and have been abusing my back with games of squash since with no problems. Thanks for the great care. Would definitely recommend.
