If you’ve been living with back pain for a while, you’ve probably tried a lot of things to feel better. Heat packs, stretching, painkillers… maybe even injections or rest. So it’s completely understandable if you’re wondering about CBD too.
CBD (cannabidiol) is being talked about more and more for pain relief – especially for persistent, nagging conditions like back pain. But does it really work? And where does it fit in when you’re trying to get your life back?
Let’s take a closer look – from a physio’s point of view.
What Is CBD and Why Do People Use It for Back Pain?
CBD is a compound found in the cannabis plant – but without the psychoactive effects. That means it won’t get you “high,” but it may interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which influences things like pain perception, inflammation, and mood.
Some people with back pain say CBD helps them:
- Feel more comfortable when sitting or sleeping
- Reduce pain during flare-ups
- Relax tight muscles or tension
It’s available in oils, capsules, balms, and sprays – with wide variation in quality, dosage, and effects.
What the Research Says About CBD and Back Pain
At the moment, there’s limited but growing evidence around CBD’s effects on back pain. Small studies suggest it may:
- Reduce inflammation in some tissues
- Dampen how the nervous system processes pain
- Help ease anxiety or poor sleep linked to chronic pain
But there’s no clear answer yet – and CBD doesn’t work for everyone.
CBD Isn’t a Fix – But It Might Be a Helpful Add-On
Here’s the truth: back pain relief is almost never about finding a single magic product. The people who make the biggest improvements are the ones who start rebuilding strength, changing habits, and moving smarter.
If you’re dealing with:
- Long-term stiffness
- Pain that comes and goes
- Discomfort when standing, walking, or bending
… then you’re far more likely to get lasting results by addressing what your body needs a proven rehab program – not just trying to dull the symptoms.
What Really Makes a Difference: Strength, Movement & Confidence
Your back is strong, adaptable, and capable of healing – even if it hasn’t felt that way lately.
As a physio, I’ve helped hundreds of people with back pain feel better by focusing on:
✅ Gradual strength-building
✅ Safe, regular movement
✅ Postural awareness and lifestyle changes
✅ Calming the nervous system
CBD might make it a little easier to start moving on painful days, and that’s worth exploring. But the real breakthrough often comes when you feel stronger, safer, and more in control of your body again.

Thinking About Trying CBD? Here’s What to Know
If you’re curious, here are a few things to consider:
- Speak to a healthcare professional before trying CBD, especially if you’re on medication
- Start low and go slow – especially with oral products
- Topicals may be helpful for local muscle or joint pain
- Don’t expect it to fix the root cause – use it alongside a strong rehab plan
