CBD for Arthritic Knee Pain: Can It Really Help?

Living with arthritic knees can be frustrating. Some days the stiffness is just annoying, and other days every step feels like a chore. It’s no wonder people start exploring every option for relief – and CBD often comes up in the conversation.

But can CBD really help with knee arthritis? And if so, where does it fit alongside the strategies that truly make the biggest difference for long-term knee health?

What Is CBD and How Might It Help?

CBD (cannabidiol) is a compound derived from the cannabis plant – but it’s not the part that makes you “high.” Instead, it interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which plays a role in pain regulation, inflammation, and mood.

Some people with arthritis report that CBD products – whether oils, balms, or capsules – help ease stiffness or reduce the discomfort that makes moving around harder.

What the Science Says About CBD for Arthritis

Current research on CBD and arthritis is still in its early stages. A few studies suggest that CBD may:

  • Reduce inflammation around affected joints
  • Dampen pain signals in the nervous system
  • Improve tolerance to exercise and movement by easing discomfort

However, results vary. CBD is not a guaranteed fix, and for many people, the improvements are subtle rather than dramatic.

CBD Alone Isn’t the Full Answer

Here’s the thing: while CBD might take the edge off, it won’t reverse arthritis or rebuild your knees.

The most reliable way to improve your knees for the long term is to:

  1. Strengthen the muscles that support your knees
  2. Improve joint mobility and balance
  3. Build confidence in movement again

This is what I focus on every day as a physiotherapist – helping people optimise their body so the joints aren’t under constant strain. When your knees are supported by strong, well-trained muscles, daily life feels easier and pain often reduces naturally.

CBD could play a supportive role, especially in helping you get moving on stiff or sore days, but it works best as part of a bigger plan.

Considering CBD for Your Knees?

If you’re thinking about trying CBD, here are a few simple tips:

  • Check local regulations – legality can vary by region

I have worked with Helen for many years at Leeds Nuffield hospital where I work as a specialist hip and knee surgeon. As part of my practice we have plenty of patients who have problems with their back. I occasionally struggle with my own back and know Helen is the lady to help sort it out. Not only did she give brilliant care in terms of getting it going again, but she also gave some great advice to keep it in great shape. I have been following this for the last couple of years and have been abusing my back with games of squash since with no problems. Thanks for the great care. Would definitely recommend.
