Best Ski Equipment for People with Arthritic Knees

Introduction

When you’re skiing with knee arthritis, having the right ski equipment can significantly reduce discomfort and make your experience more enjoyable. From knee braces to custom boots, the gear you use can play a crucial role in protecting your knees and providing the necessary support. In this blog, we’ll go over the best ski equipment for people with arthritic knees, ensuring that you’re properly outfitted to reduce strain and pain while skiing.

1. Knee Braces or Sleeves

Knee braces or sleeves can provide additional support to your knees, reducing strain and helping to stabilise the joint. They are particularly helpful when skiing, as they provide compression and could minimise the risk of injury.

Why they work: Knee braces can improve knee stability and help reduce swelling, providing extra protection against the impact of skiing. Look for knee braces that are specifically designed for skiing, as they are often more flexible and offer more movement without sacrificing support.

TOP TIPS – Sometimes a brace can irritate your knee, so try it before your trip.

Now as a physio, I’m not a huge fan of braces because the more you use a brace the less your muscles do. Most people will not need a brace, but if they help to give you confidence on an amazing skiing trip then so be it but please don’t become reliant on them.

BEST PRACTICE – Work on your body’s knee brace (your muscles) before your trip. My Arthritic Knee Program is a perfect solution to improving knee health before your trip.

Patient Case Studies – Two of this year’s arthritic knee program patients have already returned from skiing trips. Both of their knees held up well and no braces were needed. One chap Alex said he had not felt as fit on the slopes for 20 years! This is all down to their hard work engaging with the exercise and fully embracing the Arthritic Knee Program.

2. Lightweight Skis

Ski equipment that’s too heavy can increase the strain on your knees. Opt for lightweight skis that are easier to control and require less physical effort to manoeuvre.

Why they work: Light skis are less physically demanding and allow you to make smoother, more controlled turns. This reduces the stress placed on your knees, especially when skiing on steeper slopes or uneven terrain.

3. Custom Ski Boots

Custom ski boots may be worth the investment, especially if you have arthritic knees. These boots ensure a proper fit, preventing unnecessary pressure on your knees.

Why they work: Properly fitted boots can help prevent the knee from becoming misaligned during skiing, which can reduce discomfort and help you maintain better control while skiing.

4. Shock-Absorbing Ski Poles

Ski poles with shock-absorbing features could reduce the impact on your knees when turning, stopping, or navigating through rough terrain. These poles offer additional support and balance while skiing.

Why they work: Shock-absorbing ski poles can help to absorb some of the pressure that would otherwise transfer to your knees, providing smoother and more controlled movements on the slopes.

5. Compression Socks

Compression socks are an excellent addition to ski gear. They improve circulation and reduce swelling, especially after a long day on the slopes.

Why they work: These socks help promote better blood flow, which can help reduce swelling and discomfort in the knees. Wearing compression socks during skiing helps to prevent fatigue and encourages faster recovery.

Conclusion

Choosing the right ski equipment is important when skiing with knee arthritis. By selecting knee braces, lightweight skis, custom boots, shock-absorbing poles, and compression socks, you could reduce strain on your knees and improve your comfort on the slopes. Investing in the right gear will allow you to enjoy skiing without compromising your knee health.

Even more essential is ensuring your knees are strong and ski-fit. Strong knees are worth more than any equipment on the market so invest in your strength and health. I have worked with Helen for many years at Leeds Nuffield hospital where I work as a specialist hip and knee surgeon. As part of my practice we have plenty of patients who have problems with their back. I occasionally struggle with my own back and know Helen is the lady to help sort it out. Not only did she give brilliant care in terms of getting it going again, but she also gave some great advice to keep it in great shape. I have been following this for the last couple of years and have been abusing my back with games of squash since with no problems. Thanks for the great care. Would definitely recommend.
