Introduction
Standing desks have exploded in popularity, especially for people struggling with back pain.
But here’s the question I get asked all the time as a physio:
👉 “Will a standing desk actually fix my back pain?”
The honest answer?
Not quite.
In some cases, they help.
In others… they can actually make things worse.
Let’s break it down properly so you know what’s worth your time (and money).
The Short Answer
Standing desks are neither “good” nor “bad” for back pain.
👉 It all comes down to how you use them.
They can:
✔ Reduce stiffness from too much sitting
✔ Encourage better movement habits
But they can also:
❌ Increase fatigue
❌ Irritate your back
❌ Create new aches and pains
Why Sitting All Day Causes Problems
Sitting itself isn’t the enemy, but too much of it is.
When you stay in one position for hours:
- Muscles stiffen
- Joints compress
- Pressure increases
- Circulation slows
👉 Your back simply doesn’t like being still for that long.
So… Is Standing the Solution?
Not exactly.
Here’s where a lot of people go wrong:
They switch to a standing desk and think:
👉 “Right, I’ll just stand all day instead.”
But standing still for long periods:
- Loads your lower back
- Tires your muscles
- Can actually increase discomfort
👉 You’ve just swapped one static position… for another.
When Standing Desks Make Back Pain Worse
I see this a lot in clinic.
Standing desks tend to backfire when:
1. You stand for too long
Your body isn’t used to it → fatigue builds → pain increases
2. Your standing posture is not ideal
This can load the back more than sitting in a supportive chair
Check in with your standing posture in my FREE Masterclass. Identify and then improve any issues.

3. Your posture becomes rigid
Trying to “stand up straight” all day often leads to tension
4. Your setup is off
- Screen too low → slouching
- Desk too high → shoulder tension
5. You rely on it as a “fix”
This is the biggest mistake.
👉 A desk doesn’t solve the underlying issue.
When Standing Desks Do Help
They can be really useful when:
✔ You alternate regularly between sitting and standing
✔ You move more throughout the day
✔ Your setup supports good alignment
✔ Your muscles are supporting you and your posture is good
👉 Think of it as a tool for variation, not a permanent position.
The Real Secret: It’s Not Sitting vs Standing
This is the key takeaway:
👉 Your back doesn’t care whether you’re sitting or standing.
👉 It cares how long you stay there.
What your body actually needs is:
- Movement
- Variation
- Load in different ways
What I Recommend Instead (as a Physio)
Rather than obsessing over the “perfect” desk setup:
✔ Change positions regularly
- Sit → stand → walk → reset
✔ Keep movement frequent
Even small shifts help:
- weight shifts
- stepping side to side
- short walks
✔ Build strength
If your:
- core
- hips
- back
aren’t supporting you well…
👉 no desk setup will feel comfortable for long.

Final Thoughts
Standing desks aren’t a magic fix, but they’re not useless either.
Used well, they can:
✔ Help you move more
✔ Reduce stiffness
✔ Improve comfort during the day
Used poorly, they can:
❌ Add more strain
❌ Increase fatigue
❌ Leave you wondering why nothing’s improved
