Are Massage Guns Worth It? A Physiotherapist’s Honest Review (Plus Best Picks)

Massage guns are everywhere — in gyms, in Instagram reels, and on Amazon’s best-seller lists. And I’m often asked in clinic:
“Are they actually worth it?”

As a physiotherapist, I’ve had patients try everything from top-end models to cheap copies. Some swear by them. Others give up after a few days.

So here’s my honest take — who massage guns can help, when they’re not a good idea, and the devices I actually recommend.


What Are Massage Guns?

Massage guns — also called percussion or vibration massagers — are handheld devices designed to mimic deep tissue massage. They use rapid pulses of pressure to “thump” into your muscles, aiming to reduce soreness, boost circulation, and relieve tight spots.

They’ve become a go-to gadget for runners, gym-goers, and anyone dealing with general muscle tension.

But… are they effective?


Do Massage Guns Really Help?

When They Can Be Helpful:

Massage guns can be genuinely helpful when used correctly. They can be useful for;

  • Post-exercise muscle soreness
  • Tightness in large muscle groups (quads, calves, glutes, back)
  • General tension or stress relief
  • Increasing awareness of stiff or underused areas

They don’t “release” knots or break up scar tissue (despite some marketing claims), but they can improve blood flow and reduce the feeling of tightness.

💡 Tip: Use them gently. A little goes a long way — more pressure doesn’t mean better results.


When They Might Not Be Helpful:

Massage guns aren’t suitable for everyone. Don’t use them if:

  • You have sharp or nerve-related pain
  • You’re dealing with joint inflammation (e.g. active arthritis, bursitis)
  • You have osteoporosis or a high fracture risk
  • You’ve recently had surgery or injury

What I Tell My Patients

Massage devices can be a great adjunct, but they’re not a replacement for proper rehab. using them along side a structure exercise program is ideal. Ideal use;

  • Use them for 1–2 minutes per muscle group
  • Stay off joints and bony areas
  • Follow up with stretching or movement
  • Use consistently — not just when you’re sore

Most importantly, if you have recurring tension or pain, address the underlying cause. Massage can relieve symptoms — but strength, mobility, and proper movement are what fix them.

Final Thoughts: Worth It?

Massage guns can absolutely be worth it — especially if:

  • You get sore after workouts
  • You carry tension in certain muscles
  • You want to wind down or feel looser before/after activity

But don’t fall for the hype. They’re a helpful tool — not a miracle cure. I hope you have found this helpful.
