My Go-To Walking Shoes for Achy Backs (and Why They Work)

When your back is aching, the right shoes can make all the difference. Whether you’re walking around the block or running errands, proper footwear helps reduce strain on your back and improve comfort. Here are my go-to walking shoes for achy backs, and why they work:

1. Brooks Addiction Walker 2

These shoes are specifically designed to provide excellent cushioning and support, with a substantial midsole that absorbs shock. They also have a wider base for added stability, which helps with alignment and reduces the risk of further back strain.

2. New Balance 928v3

Known for their motion control and excellent arch support, the New Balance 928v3 helps to keep your feet in a neutral position, which is key for protecting your back. With their rollbar technology, they provide stability to reduce excessive motion that can cause discomfort.

3. Asics Gel-Nimbus 23

This running shoe also doubles as a great walking shoe. The Gel-Nimbus 23 offers plush cushioning and superior support, which is essential for reducing impact on the spine while walking. The lightweight design ensures you won’t feel bogged down, yet it still provides the stability your back needs.

Why These Shoes Work for Back Pain

The key to choosing shoes for achy backs is finding ones that offer ample cushioning and support. Shoes with proper arch support help align the body and minimise the impact that traveling up from your feet can have on your spine.

Remember

Shoes are important, but to truly address your back pain, you need to consider other factors like posture, strengthening exercises, and lifestyle habits. While the right shoes help, they won’t resolve the issue without a more comprehensive approach.

Conclusion

Choosing the right walking shoes can make a world of difference when it comes to managing back pain. Supportive, cushioned footwear like the Brooks Addiction Walker 2, New Balance 928v3, and Asics Gel-Nimbus 23 can help realign your posture, absorb impact, and make everyday activities far more comfortable.

But remember — while the right shoes provide important support, they’re just one piece of the puzzle. Building core strength, improving posture, and making small changes to your daily habits are equally important steps toward a healthier, pain-free back. If you need help with this then you know where I am.

I have worked with Helen for many years at Leeds Nuffield hospital where I work as a specialist hip and knee surgeon. As part of my practice we have plenty of patients who have problems with their back. I occasionally struggle with my own back and know Helen is the lady to help sort it out. Not only did she give brilliant care in terms of getting it going again, but she also gave some great advice to keep it in great shape. I have been following this for the last couple of years and have been abusing my back with games of squash since with no problems. Thanks for the great care. Would definitely recommend.
