As a physiotherapist, I can confidently say: yes, heat can help.

Let’s look at how heat works for back pain, when to use it safely, and some of the best heat products you can use at home — ideal for daily relief or as a thoughtful self-care gift.


How Heat Therapy Works for Back Pain

Heat therapy (also called thermotherapy) can be a powerful tool in managing back pain — especially chronic or muscular pain. Here’s how it helps:

1. Increases Blood Flow

Applying heat improves circulation, delivering more oxygen and nutrients to tight or tired muscles, while helping clear away waste from inflammation.

2. Relaxes Tight Muscles

Back pain often involves muscle tension — especially in the lower back and shoulders. Heat helps those muscles soften and release, easing that stiff, achy feeling.

3. Reduces Pain Signals

Heat has a soothing effect on the nervous system. It can help reduce pain signals to the brain and give you a sense of comfort and calm — especially helpful during stress-related flare-ups.

4. Promotes Healing and Rest

Using heat encourages your body to relax and shift into recovery mode — making it easier to rest, move gently, and heal well.


When Not to Use Heat for Back Pain

While heat is helpful in many cases, it’s not suitable for every type of back pain. Avoid heat therapy if:

  • You’ve had a recent injury (within 48 hours) or suspect inflammation
  • Your back is red, swollen, or feels hot to touch
  • You have reduced sensation (e.g., due to diabetes or neuropathy)
  • You’re unsure what’s causing your pain — check with your physiotherapist first
